It is time of the year when hotels and airlines are tinkering with their loyalty programs and award charts.
A LoyaltyLobby reader forwarded me an email that he had received from Kimpton today regarding the policy changes.
The main changes:
– Inner Circle members no longer have guaranteed availability but rather are given “priority”
– The free night at new properties is now usually valid for only six months after opening

As we begin a new year, we’re excited about what’s to come in 2014. We’ve been hard at work behind the scenes, and can’t wait to reveal what we’ve been up to later this year.
We know nothing says fun as much as “policy updates,” but alas, they are necessary. We are growing rapidly, which means new cities, new hotels and new restaurants (Hello, Grand Cayman!). As such, we need to manage our business smartly so that we can continue to offer new and enticing perks. So here we go.
Raid the Bar: In order to receive your Raid-The-Bar credit, you must mark your card where you want it applied (either in the mini-bar or restaurant bar), and just turn it in at check-out.
Reward Nights: As a reminder, beginning July 18, 2013, we changed the expiration of a reward night from 2 years to 1 year. If you earned a reward night prior to July 18, 2013, you’ll continue to have 2 years before it expires. The good news? Stay credits never expire.
Serrano, San Francisco: Effective January 30, 2014, The Serrano Hotel and Jasper’s Corner Tap & Kitchen will no longer be part of the collection of boutique hotels and restaurants operated by Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants. The Serrano Hotel and Jasper’s will continue to operate – just under new management. Don’t worry, we’ve got 7 other San Francisco hotels in the area.
Existing Member Past Eligible Stay Credit: Effective February 1, 2014, you can receive credit for any eligible stays that you had within 6 months of making the request. We realize that sometimes reservations are made without using your InTouch number and you don’t receive the credit you deserve.
48 Hour Availability: We’ll continue to do our best to accommodate any request, but if a hotel is sold out, we can no longer guarantee availability within 48 hours of a reservation.
Free Night at New Hotels: This benefit is still available, through April 1, 2014, for one night at the Amara Resort & Spa in Sedona, AZ.

The previous guaranteed room availability did exclude special events such as Superbowl or Mardi Gras, but guaranteed 48-hour availability sounds better than just “priority”. The free night award at newly opened hotels now has shorter usage timeframe.
