SriLankan Airlines Joins Oneworld Alliance On March 1, 2014

SriLankan Airlines spokesperson confirmed to Australian Business Traveller (access here) that the airline is joining the Oneworld alliance on March 1, 2014.

Edit: Seems that this is further delayed and new information should be coming out in the next month or so.

The airline has been sponsored by Cathay Pacific and was originally set to join the alliance by the end of 2013, but this was postponed.

SriLankan Airlines opens up many destinations in India via its Colombo hub. The airline also servers number of destinations in the Middle East and Europe. The airline also operates a minihub in Bangkok and has fifth freedom rights for its China flights (Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou).

The airline doesn’t operate flights to Africa, Australasia or North America.

SriLankan Routes Middle East

The Oneworld alliance airlines usually offer double miles for new entrant’s flights for a set period after joining. We should learn more about this soon.

SriLankan Airlines is a god addition to the Oneworld Alliance and Colombo worth visiting at least once (I have been there several times). Airfares originating from Colombo used to be very low during the fighting (civil war) with the Tamil tigers that is now long gone.
