There was an interesting airline related news piece this past week. Air France-KLM has decided to invest $100 million to GOL Linhas Aereas, Sao Paulo based airline.

Delta Air Lines already owns 6% of the airline after investing into it and SkyMiles members can earn and use miles on GOL flights.

You can read more about this on Reuters website here and on Bloomberg Businessweek here.

It does take some time for the authorities to accept he deal, but no hurdles are expected. GOL has struggled with its debt load that is mainly denominated in foreign currency, as the value of the real has slipped.

Conclusion

Delta already owns a piece of GOL and Air France-KLM soon will have their share. Brazil’s biggest airline TAM is joining the Oneworld alliance in March and Avianca Brazil is expected to join the Star Alliance in due course.

It would be rather logical for the GOL to join the SkyTeam once they have fixed their financial issues.
