Now that it is about a week after the latest round of PointBreaks were released, I thought that we could have a look what is gone from the list within the first week.
The PointBreaks were released somewhere between 9AM to 9:30AM EST last Monday and the availability for two properties was gone almost instantaneously (IC Hanzghou and Mumbai).
1st Day (Removed Tuesday)
STAYBRIDGE SUITES ABU DHABI – YAS ISLAND
BERLIN – MITTE HOLIDAY INN
HOLIDAY INN VILNIUS
HOLIDAY INN GWANGJU, KOREA
HOLIDAY INN ZHUHAI
HOLIDAY INN JASMINE SUZHOU
HOLIDAY INN EXPRESS AND SUITES TORONTO-MISSISSAUGA
CROWNE PLAZA HOTEL LIMA
SAN DIEGO NORTH MIRAMAR HOLIDAY INN
HOLIDAY INN SOMERSET-BRIDGEWATER
The intercontinental Hangzhou from the above list was gone within the first 30 minutes after it became bookable.
2nd Day (Removed Wednesday)
CROWNE PLAZA HOTEL AL KHOBAR
CROWNE PLAZA HOTEL ZHENGZHOU
STAYBRIDGE SUITES SALT LAKE-WEST VALLEY CITY
3rd Day (Removed Thursday)
CROWNE PLAZA HOTEL PROVIDENCE-WARWICK (AIRPORT)
I was quite surprised that the InterContinental Medellin was removed from the list only by Thursday. Maybe there aren’t that many IHG Rewards Club members in South America that would want to book PointBreaks?
4th Day (Removed Friday)
HOLIDAY INN FORTALEZA
HOLIDAY INN EXPRESS SUMARE AVE. – SAO PAULO
CANDLEWOOD SUITES NANUET-ROCKLAND COUNTY
I was actually surprised that the Holiday Inn Fortaleza was not gone by the first day, as it is quite popular destination for both Europeans and Brazilians to vacation.
Gone (Availability But Still On The List)
INTERCONTINENTAL MARINE DRIVE-MUMBAI
I am not sure what InterContinental Marine Drive still does on the PointBreaks list, as the availability was gone almost instantaneously.
Some had their reservation(s) mysteriously canceled by the hotel (?) and/or IHG Rewards Club account audited.
Here’s an email from a reader:
I am a long term reader and big fan of your blog. I have encountered a rather strange problem today with the IC Hangzhou unilaterally canceling my pointbreaks booking (3 nights). I called IHG and they told me they will ask the hotel to reinstate my booking but as it appears that the booking was cancelled online there isn’t much they can do. I know of at least another Flyertalker who is experiencing the same problem. Clearly I did not cancel the booking myself, same thing for the other Flyertalker.
Do you know if this situation has a precedent? It really feels as if the hotel doesn’t want to honor the pointbreaks bookings.
Here’s an update from yesterday:
This is the followup email I received from the IC Hangzhou concerning the reservation that was mysteriously canceled.
I am quite happy that they reinstated my reservation but I feel like I should ask for some compensation for all the troubles. Maybe club access or an upgrade would be fair to both parties.
Quite difficult to understand why the hotel would have canceled PointBreaks bookings unless they REALLY didn’t want to honor them, but why then have the hotel under one of the IHG brands?
More IHG Rewards Club members are aware of these PointBreaks and how good deal the better ones are.
Seems that IHG has really created a monster with these PointBreaks and the availability for the most popular properties in gone within the first half an hour later they are released.
I have never seen such a weird behavior by a hotel than what has been going on with this InterContinental property in Hangzhou.
They didn’t like all the award bookings coming in and had decided unilaterally cancel few of them, although some have had their reservations reinstated, as was the case with the reader above.
