Dubai used to be a minefield for SPG guests booking hotels due to number of hotels that were affiliated with the Starwood Hotels & Resorts but that were not participating to the SPG.
Slowly and steadily this has changed. Now, Le Meridien Dubai and Le Meridien Fairway have become SPG participating properties, where guests can earn and use Starpoints and receive status related benefits.
Le Meridien Dubai is category 5 and Le Meridien Fairway is category 3.
There are now only two properties left that are non SPG participating:
Le Méridien Mina Seyahi Beach Resort & Marina
The Westin Dubai Mina Seyahi Beach Resort & Marina
This non-participation was mostly left from the time when Le Meridien was not part of the Starwood Hotels & Resorts and hotels were not willing to pay the 5% SPG participation fee of the room revenue once the chain was acquired. Their contracts with the Starwood were likely npw up and the participation to the SPG program required. This is just my educated guess.
I have not stayed at either of these two properties, but I have used the F&B outlets a the Le Meridien that is essentially an airport hotel.
The SPG award category is out of whack with both of these properties when compared to paid rates.
