A LoyaltyLobby reader forwarded me a denial email that he had received from Etihad Guest regarding the status match campaign that he participated back in February (read more here).
The campaign was first open to all but Etihad later changed the terms and conditions for it to only apply for UAE residents (read more here).
There was some comments left in the past weeks that the frequent flier card with Gold expiry in March 2016 had started to arrive for some.
Others received the “Sorry” email above that you can access on Etihad’s website here.
Etihad Guest has been extending these status match offers yearly. It does seems to be a lottery, however, who they happen to match. There is no rhyme or reason at all.
If you are after Etihad Gold status and have status with a competing airlines, travel agencies are still able to process these with Etihad’s local sales offices. You do have to commit to take and purchase flights on Etihad through the agency to make it worthwhile for them.
