Here are the line by line changes:

NUMBER OF REWARDS NIGHTS THAT CAN BE BOOKED

New: Reward Night reservations may be booked for multiple hotel rooms (up to 9) on the same stay date at the same property provided the IHG® Rewards Club member number is recorded on each reservation and the required points are redeemed for each room.

Previous: Reward Night reservations may be booked for multiple hotel rooms (less than 10) on the same stay date at the same property provided the IHG® Rewards Club member number is recorded on each reservation and the required points are redeemed for each room.

The number of reward nights that can be booked has been changed from less than 10 to up to 9. No change really.

CAPACITY CONTROLS

New: There are no blackout dates for Reward Nights, however, room inventory is limited and subject to prior sale.

Previous: Rooms are limited, subject to prior sale and availability of allocated resources and may be unavailable during high demand periods.

IHG doesn’t have blackout dates but unlike chains such as the Hilton, Hyatt or SPG they don’t have to make all the standard inventory available for awards. IHG hotels must make available at least 5% of their room inventory.

AWARD NIGHT CLARIFICATION

New: IHG® Rewards Club points or airline miles are not awarded for the room rate equivalent on Reward Night stays; however, points are awarded for all other eligible charges. Reward Night stays are defined as those in which a member redeems points for a Reward Night and include Reward Nights booked via Points & Cash.

Previous: IHG® Rewards Club points or airline miles are not awarded for the room rate equivalent on Reward Night stays; however, points are awarded for all other eligible charges to the member’s room except at InterContinental Hotels and Resorts. Reward Night stays are defined as those in which a member redeems points for a Reward Night.

IHG has added clarification that Points + Cash nights are considered awards.

RESELLING OF AWARDS

New: Reward Nights, in-hotel redemptions, redeemable gift vouchers and merchandise may not be sold or used for commercial gains. Doing so is a programme violation and may result in the freezing of your account, the forfeiture of all point transfers, rewards, vouchers, or merchandise issued pursuant to point redemptions and any accrued points or miles in your account, as well as cancellation of the account and your future participation in the Programme.

Previous: Reward Nights, in-hotel redemptions, redeemable gift vouchers and merchandise may not be sold or used for commercial gains.

IHG has added lots of warnings that awards should not be sold or used for commercial gain. This may lead to freezing of your account and banning from the program.

POINT BREAKS

New: IHG® Rewards Club PointBreaks is a Reward Nights special offer. PointBreaks are Reward Nights priced at 5,000 points at selected hotels for a limited period of time, instead of the standard redemption rate. IHG® Rewards Club PointBreaks Reward Nights are based on availability and PointBreaks locations may be added or deleted at any time. Due to the limited availability, each member may only book two PointBreaks Reward Nights reservations per hotel during the special offer time period. The PointBreaks special offer may be restricted, suspended, modified, or substituted at any time without notice. Reward Nights booked through PointBreaks may not be sold or used for commercial gains. Doing so is a programme violation and may result in the freezing of your account, the forfeiture of all point transfers, rewards, vouchers, or merchandise issued pursuant to point redemptions and any accrued points or miles in your account, as well as cancellation of the account and your future participation in the Programme. All other Reward Nights terms and conditions apply.

Previous: IHG® Rewards Club PointBreaks are a feature of Reward Nights.  PointBreaks are Reward Nights priced at 5,000 points at selected hotels for a limited period of time, instead of the standard redemption rate.  IHG® Rewards Club PointBreaks Reward Nights are based on availability and PointBreaks locations may be added or deleted at any time.

The change is that you can only book two PointBreaks award night reservations per hotel. Previously there was no limit. Also, IHG has added the same warning about reselling of awards.

LAST MINUTE REWARD NIGHTS

New: Last Minute Reward Nights is a Reward Nights special offer. Last Minute Reward Nights are Reward Nights available at up to 50% off the standard Reward Night redemption rates at selected hotels for a very limited period of time, which will vary by offer. Last Minute Reward Nights are based on availability and Last Minute Reward Night locations may be added or deleted at any time. Due to the limited availability, each member may only book one Last Minute Reward Nights reservation per hotel during the special offer time period. The Last Minute Reward Nights special offer may be restricted, suspended, modified, or substituted at any time without notice. Reward Nights booked through Last Minute Reward Nights may not be sold or used for commercial gains.

The new terms also limit the number of Last Minute Reward Nights reservations that a member can have at any hotel to just one. IHG has added the same warning of selling award nights or using them for commercial gain.

Conclusion

The terms governing the IHG Rewards Club program just keep getting longer and longer. The main change is the limit of reservations that one can have for Point Breaks and Last Minute Reward Nights properties to two and one.

Now that Hyatt considers Points + Cash as paid nights for promotional purposes, IHG has clarified the terms and conditions that they don’t.

There must have been major reselling of award nights going on as IHG has now added the warning of selling awards or using them for commercial gain to three different parts. This may lead to account freeze and cancellation.
