IHG Rewards Club & Ambassador InterContinental Hotels Point Earning Change July 1, 2014

The number of base points that you earn as an IHG Rewards Club members for InterContinental hotel stays outside of the Americas and the Caribbean + InterContinental Alliance resorts have been capped at 2,000 points per stay regardless of the spend.

IHG has now several times tried to kill the Ambassador Accelerator that pays out 20,000 bonus points for every 15 paid InterContinental nights and it was extended to June 30 in early May (read more here).

You can access IHG’s Ambassador program web page here.

At the time, I requested clarification from IHG regarding the possible point earning change but have not received a conclusive reply.

IHG has not changed the terms and conditions governing the loyalty program, but seems that all InterContinental hotels will earn the flat 10 points per USD (excluding InterContinental Alliance resorts) starting on July 1, 2014.

IHG has not communicated whether Ambassador Accelerator will be extended (likely not) and what happens to the Royal Ambassador bonus of 50%. Royal Ambassador members are automatically IHG Rewards Club Platinum members and receive 50% Platinum bonus.

Here’s the earning change regarding flat versus variable from my post two weeks ago:

IHG Rewards Club base, Gold & Platinum member

Current: 2,000 flat points per stay + 10% Gold or 50% Platinum bonus

Variable: 10 points per USD spent + 10% Gold or 50% Platinum bonus

As long as your qualified folio spent (room + incidentals) is more than $200, you are better off by variable spend.

InterContinental Ambassador (IHG Rewards Club Gold)

Current: 2,000 flat points per stay, 10% Gold bonus + Ambassador Accelerator of 1,333 points per stay (prorated)

Variable: 10 points per USD + 10% Gold bonus

As long as your qualified folio spent (room + incidentals) is more than $321.21, you are better off by variable spend.

InterContinental Ambassador (IHG Rewards Club Platinum)

Current: 2,000 flat points per stay, 50% Platinum bonus + Ambassador Accelerator of 1,333 points per stay (prorated)

Variable: 10 points per USD + 50% Platinum bonus

As long as your qualified folio spent (room + incidentals) is more than $288.88, you are better off by variable spend.

InterContinental Royal Ambassador (IHG Rewards Club Platinum)

Current: 2,000 flat points per stay, 50% Platinum bonus, 50% Royal Ambassador bonus + Ambassador Accelerator of 1,333 points per stay (prorated)

Variable: 10 points per USD + 50% Platinum bonus + 50% Royal Ambassador bonus

As long as your qualified folio spent (room + incidentals) is more than $266.65, you are better off by variable spend.

Here are five InterContinental hotels that I checked for July 1, 2014 that then all have the variable earning.

Then I checked both InterContinental Alliance Resorts in Las Vegas for later in the year and the reservation system was still showing flat 2,000 points per stay.

Conclusion

IHG Rewards Club & Ambassador program could have communicated this upcoming change much clearer than they have done (no communication at all). This change will be positive for most, but you can earn a lot less if you have one night stays at the least expensive InterContinental hotels.

I would be keen to know what will happen with the Ambassador Accelerator and the Royal Ambassador bonuses? Is the flat 2,000 points per stay at InterContinental Alliance Resorts just an oversight?

Thanks to several LoyaltyLobby readers who alerted me about this change over the weekend.
