As I am flying to Hong Kong on Tuesday and my two week long PointBreaks stay at the Crowne Plaza is coming to an end on Monday, I was looking for some SPG options for the night to get my SPG Platinum qualifying stays in for the year as well.
At the end of 2013, I was short on my SPG stays and decided to get them all in over two week period in Bangkok. What I found was that it is easy to get BRG’s done for Aloft, Le Meridien and Royal Orchid Sheraton that continuously have lower rates on 3rd party sites.
You can access SPG Best Rate Guarantee here.
SPG.com price versus Expedia.co.th
Expedia has number of country sites that can come handy for these BRG’s. Note that this price is also available on Expedia.com that is priced in USD.
The price on Expedia’s Thailand web price was 3,100 THB
compared to 3,471 on SPG.com
Starwood Best Rate Guarantee application
The Starwood has changed the BRG form since my previous use.
It now asks for the confirmation number and the last name
that it used to pull up the reservation information
and you then have to fill out the information for the competing website and choose between additional 10% discount or matched price + 2,000 Starpoints.
Once you click the submit on the previous step, you are then thanked for filing the BRG.
You will receive an email confirmation few minutes later as well.
The confirmation of the claim approval came two and a half hours after I had submitted it.
Last year, I had a few bad experiences with SPG BRG claims that were done over the weekend. SPG sat on them for close to two days during which the rates were all long gone from the third party sites.
Seems that Le Meridien now has the Red Hot Deals 50% off rate available that is still higher than the price on Expedia’s Thailand one. If you try to match the price on Expedia.com that is listed on USD, SPG can now claim that the price difference is not significant enough due to currency conversion and deny it. The claim against the Expedia.co.th should still work.
