KLM “Enhances” Baggage Fees For Non-status Flying Blue Members

KLM moved to paid checked in bag fees for intra-Europe flights last year (read more here) but decided to waive them for ALL Flying Blue members.

KLM Baggage Update

There must have been too many to join the program as the airline has now decided to extend the baggage fees for Ivory (non-status) members for tickets issued on or after October 1 , 2014.

You can access KLM’s web page for this change here.

Here are the exemptions to this fee:

  • European Economy Class tickets booked and issued before 1 October 2014

  • Fully flexible tickets (booking class Y or B) within Europe

  • European Economy Class tickets booked with Award Miles (award tickets)

  • Flights to Belarus, Georgia, Italy, Russia or Ukraine

  • Passengers travelling on and/or transferring to KLM intercontinental flights

  • Flying Blue Elite members, who will continue to benefit from a baggage allowance of two items

The fee for checking a bag when booked online is 7,5 euros and at the airport 15 euros. I can only imagine these prices to go up.

Conclusion

It is sad to see more of the “full” service airlines (what are there still left?) trying to morph into the LCC model where most of the true price of the airline tickets are those “optional” ancillary fees that are added at every step.
