United Airlines made an announcement yesterday that Hertz including Dollar and Thrifty would become its exclusive car rental partners on November 1, 2014.
The number of miles earned for Hertz rentals will also change from per day to set number of miles regardless of rental length.
You can access United’s web page for this announcement here.
Here is the new earning structure for Hertz rentals:
• 1,250 miles – MileagePlus Global Services, Premier 1K and Premier Platinum members;
• 1,000 miles – MileagePlus Premier Gold and Premier Silver members;
• 750 miles – Primary cardmembers of MileagePlus credit cards from Chase; or
• 500 miles – MileagePlus general members.
Hertz Five Star & President’s Circle Status
Part of the deal with Hertz, United has negotiated President’s Circle status for Global Service, Premier 1K and Platinum members. Those that hold MileagePlus Club and Presidential Plus Card will also receive this status
Premier Gold and Silver members receive Hertz Five Star status.
There is very little difference between car rental companies and I continue to rent based on the price and number of miles earned with promotions.
This new Hertz earnings is good for short rentals of a day or two, but not competitive for longer 5 day to a week rentals that earn a lot more miles with other airlines when coupons are used.
I am sure that Hertz continues their partnership with other airline frequent flier programs as well. Maybe United believes that it can push enough of its members to use Hertz so that losing the revenue that comes from other rental companies doesn’t matter.
