Southwest Airlines has a new offer for buying or gifting Rapid Rewards points and getting 35% bonus between now and April 22, 2015.
You can access this offer on Southwest’s buy Rapid Rewards points website (handled by Points.com) here.
The price of a Rapid Rewards points purchased under this offer is 2.03 cents each.
Does it make ANY sense to buy Rapid Rewards points?
The value of a Rapid Rewards point used for Wanna Getaway fares is 1.4 cents, 1 cent for Anytime fares and 0.83 cents for Business Select fares. Southwest is further devaluing the value of Rapid Rewards points on April 17, 2015 (read more here)
It makes no sense whatsoever to purchase Rapid Rewards points at 2.03 cents each, when the maximum value that you can get out of them is capped at 1.4 cents each. The only time I could consider buying would be if I would need to top off an account (small number of points) for an award redemption.
Note that paid fares would EARN more Rapid Rewards points. Certain taxes are not applicable for award tickets issued using Rapid Rewards points and ticket are cancelable.
Buying points purely because they are on sale doesn’t often makes much sense. This is one of those sales that is very difficult to justify unless you need low number of miles for an award.
