Here’s the reader question from Cathy:

I have 100,000+ IHG points, yea me! How do I get Spire Elite Status?

Merely having 100,000 IHG Rewards Club points sitting in your account won’t make you Spire Elite.

You first must check your account status for elite qualifying points and nights (access here):

IHG Rewards Club Spire Elite Qualifying Points

You can see the number of qualifies points and nights since the beginning of this year with possible rollovers from 2014.

Then you need to understand what points are elite points qualifying ones:

For purposes of determining Elite Status, IHG® Rewards Club points are classified as either Elite Qualifying Points or Non-Elite Qualifying Points. Base points earned from Qualifying Rates paid for hotel stays, points collected from partner transactions, IHG® Rewards Club Bonus Points Packages and Meeting Rewards are considered Elite Qualifying Points and counted towards membership elite status.

If you are close to reaching the status by elite qualifying points, you can always book Bonus Points Packages to go with your stay (sometimes there are 10K to 20K ones with certain hotels). You just have to make sure that they post correctly (rarely they don’t).

Conclusion

It is rare that partner transactions count towards the elite qualifying points with hotel loyalty programs but that is the case with IHG Rewards Club. Buying IHG Rewards Club points doesn’t (it used to). The fastest way really is to buy very high bonus points packages to go with your stay (10K to 20K ones that some hotels are offering).

But do you really need the Spire status? Right now the only official benefit is 100% bonus on base points compared to 50% for Platinum members. IHG Rewards Club has hinted that there are some new benefits coming in 2016.
