SPG Platinum Requalification Email (Late Check-out Confusion)

Starwood Preferred Guest (SPG) sent me an email two days ago congratulating requalification for another year of Platinum membership (eight years in a row now).

The email was as expected otherwise but the late check-out benefit was weirdly worded “Stay longer. 4 p.m. late checkout when available.2”.

You can access SPG Platinum benefits here.

Here’s copy of the email:

Here’s the small print:

2 Subject to availability at resort and conference center hotels.

So, this basically means that the late check out is not guaranteed but is rather subject to availability at Starwood hotels that are classified either resorts or conference hotels.

The problem is that many hotels that are neither resorts nor conference centers are classified as such and you may have to “push” the late check out.

Hyatt and IHG (at InterContinental hotels) can guarantee me 4PM check out. With both Hilton and Marriott it is based on “availability”. I like when the benefits are FIRM and there is no confusion and no “pushing” required.
