Cathay Pacific: 20% Redemption Promotion Between HKG and Selected Cities in Taiwan & Japan (Book by 19 Aug 2015)

Cathay Pacific Asia Miles and the Marco Polo Club have published a promotion that gives a 20% Discount on redemptions between Hong Kong and a variety of cities in Taiwan and Japan.

Cathay Pacific

While the Cathay Pacific redemption chart is not the best, some short distance flights are actually not too bad and with this additional discount it could be worthwhile to book it this way.

These specific flights are actually pretty overpriced, last week I had to book a Cathay Pacific flight between Hong Kong and Taipei and was astonished how expensive that short flight was supposed to be (around 700$). I ended up redeeming 4500 BA Miles for a one way in Economy.

Cathay published a special chart for this promotion

CX Promo

It’s also possible to book one way tickets for the promotional discount so this could be useful if you have small amounts of miles left in the account. For example my Marco Polo account has around 9k or so left, maybe i just use this promo to clear out the account and be done with it.

There are specific booking / travel periods for this

Redemption Booking Period:

4–19 August 2015

Travel Period:

Kaohsiung, Taichung and Taipei: 17 August–18 September 2015

Nagoya and Tokyo (Haneda Airport): 25 August–17 September 2015

This promotion is only available for bookings made online, call center reservations are not eligible.

Conclusion

This is a nice promo for those based in Hong Kong or even Taiwan and the associated routes are what you fly on anyway. As I mentioned above, I find the award chart for AsiaMiles/Marco Polo overpriced compared with the competition so this takes the edge off a little bit.
