AviancaTaca Life Miles published a new Buy Miles Promotion today which runs until September 30th 2015. It offered a staggered bonus of up to 135% depending on the amount of miles you buy.

In addition there is another promotion tied to this one where readers of a brazilian travel website (anyone really) will receive an additional 10% if they register today September 8th and buy their miles until September 15th 2015.

While in the past promotions for LifeMiles has been an even two for one, this time the program announced that there are changes in the bonus process. There are now stages and depending on the amount you purchases the bonus climbs up.

The bonus stages are 50%, 75%, 100% and then climb in 5% steps up to 135%. You can access the Life Miles Website with the detailed chart here and I quoted it below.

Lifemiles Promo ChartAs you can see from the chart the 100% Bonus will be already reached after 7,000 Miles purchase so nothing to be concerned about if you are after the double bonus only. Lifemiles seems to have adjusted the pricing for these miles based on residency once again and it gets pretty confusing.

Each package of 1,000 miles costs USD 38,94, including all taxes applicable to each country*. For residents in Colombia, each package of 1,000 miles, has a cost of USD 33, the values are settled based on Colombia’s exchange rate on the date of the transaction. For residents in Peru each package of 1,000 miles has a cost of USD 38,94 or S/.123.44 including taxes. Reference exchange rate to July 1st 2015: S/. 3.17 Per 1 USD dollar. For residents in Costa Rica, each package of 1,000 miles has a cost of USD 33 plus taxes. The values are settled based on the exchange rate prevailing on the date of the transaction.

Keep in mind that as long as you have 40% of the required award miles in your account you can substitute the remaining miles for 15$ per 1000 miles during the booking process. That is a better value than USD 38.94 USD for 2,000 miles (assuming you only get the 100% Bonus). You have to do the math and maybe try a dummy booking.

Important is also that during this promotion you can purchase up to 360,000 Miles per year which is a huge jump from the previous limit (even though I had the impression that was never really enforced).

Now let’s come to this extra 10% promotion I have been mentioning above. It is addresses to readers of the Brazilian travel website Passageiro de Primeira (you can access it here) and the registration on a separate page (access here) is required today, September 8th.

Lifemiles 10PCT

I was a bit sceptical about that site at first but it seems legit and the purchase will be done via the Lifemiles main website. Only the registration has to be done today, you have until September 15th to buy the miles and receive the extra 10% Bonus.

If you go on the Passageiro de Primeira website (note: this website is in portuguese) I referenced above you will find some routing options. But again, you have to do the math and also compared the currently numerous good deals out there where you can outright purchase a Business Class ticket. John recently bought a ticket from Brussels to Brazil for 1,200 EUR in Iberia Business Class. That is cheaper than buying miles and it earns a good amount on top.

Conclusion

Life Miles has been around for a few years now since AviancaTaca joined Star Alliance and started to have these very generous sales paired with great redemption values. Over time however the program became notorious for changing redemption levels and award availability overnight which left many members with balances they were no longer able to use as planned.

With these extra 35% + 10% you could make a good deal but be careful especially if you do not have an immediate use for these miles. The options for redeeming Lifemiles are now severely limited and I haven’t been able to find any proper connection in First Class between Asia and Europe anymore. Singapore Airlines redemptions have vanished completely and Lufthansa First Class is also unavailable. Those were the bright spots previously.

Here are the Terms & Conditions of the promotion at the time of this article:
