A United Airlines flight en route to San Francisco was forced to make a return to Frankfurt airport yesterday after a bomb threat surfaced for flight UA902.
After the aircraft landed safely, all passengers underwent a security check and accommodated overnight. The flight has been rescheduled for Saturday.
As yesterday was the 14th anniversary of the September 11th Terror Attacks, security alerts are being taken even more seriously then they are usually. It comes to no surprise that immediately after authorities learned about the threat against flight UA902 the aircraft was recalled.
CBS News reported about the development of the story (access here) but it is not mentioned how authorities learned about the threat in the first place.
A United Airlines flight out of Frankfurt, Germany, was forced to return to the airport shortly after take-off Friday because of a bomb threat, a law enforcement source tells CBS News homeland security correspondent Jeff Pegues.
United Flight 902 returned to the airport safely at 3:39 p.m. local time. …
A spokesman for the federal police said after the jet returned safely, all luggage and people on board were searched but nothing was found. Nobody was detained in the incident.
Federal police spokesman Christian Altenhofen told The Associated Press on Friday that because the threat specifically named Flight 902 and because of the date – the 14th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terror attacks – “it made us take the threat seriously.” Altenhofen says Friday’s flight was canceled by the airline and has been rescheduled for Saturday.
A few passengers took to social media to report or vent about the incident. Judging by some of the comments it seems that once again United Airlines had no immediate staff handy to assist the passengers. This might have been due to security limitations though so I don’t want to be too quick in giving UA a verbal beating for that without knowing all the facts.
One passenger, Mr Yazan Malkosh, kept people updated via his Twitter account (see here) where he summarized the incident well and also took some nice photos. Have a look!
Here is the flightpath of UA902 which shows the way it took coming back into Frankfurt. Must have been quite a heavy landing considering the plane was full of fuel for it’s way to SFO.
Passengers were put up at the Sheraton Hotel Frankfurt Airport at Terminal 1 and are now awaiting their return to San Francisco today.
Glad everyone is ok and there were no injuries of any sort during the landing or while disembarking the aircraft. Even though stairs were used, you never know in such situations.
It will be interesting to see if any more information is forthcoming about this incident such as who actually made the threat and how it was relayed to the authorities.
