British Airways introduced the ability to use partly Avios for paid fares during one of the recent program changes.
The ratio of Avios needed in exchange for cash is usually very bad, but they now have a promotion where the value is 2.5 times the usual for travel Until September 30, 2016, when booked by October 19 and redeemed for business and first class.
You can access British Airways web page for this promotion here.
Note that you can substitute cash for Avios also on flights operated by Iberia and American Airlines.
This promotion is valid for following destinations:
Abu Dhabi, Bahrain, Bangkok, Beijing, Bengaluru, Chengdu Shuangliu, Chicago, Dallas – Forth Worth, Delhi Indira Ghandi International, Dubai, Hong Kong, Houston, Hyderabad, JFK, Kuala Lumpur International, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Mexico City, Montreal, Mumbai, Newark, Philadelphia International, San Francisco International, Seoul, Shanghai Pudong, Singapore Changi, Toronto, Vancouver, Washington.
Here’s the comparison between the promotional discount versus the standard one:
Considering that British Airways charges very high fuel surcharges on award tickets (when the price of oil is ten year low), using Avios for these paid tickets can make sense.
You earn the elite and award miles based on fully paid ticket (great when you combine with promotions).
