Design Hotels, Berlin based chain of more than 300 design hotels that has been partly/majority owned by Starwood already for couple of years, now has SPG participating properties.

Starwood Design Hotels

There are now five Design Hotels that are SPG participating and the number is expected to raise to 40 by the beginning of 2016. Redeeming for participating Design Hotels will be available in early 2016.

You can access SPG’s website for Design Hotels here.

Here are the benefits that SPG members can expect to receive at Design Hotels:

  • 2 Starpoints per eligible US dollar spent (with a 50% bonus for SPG Gold and Platinum members, and 100% bonus for Platinum members with a minimum of 75 Eligible Nights)
  • Night and stay credit toward elite status
  • On-property benefits of internet access and bottled water in room
  • Gold Preferred and Platinum Preferred Members will automatically receive a Starpoints bonus as their Welcome Gift.

Other on-property benefits such as upgrades, late checkout, Your24 or Suite Night Awards will not be available at participating hotels. Free Night redemption is expected to be available early 2016.

Conclusion

These Design Hotels do participate to SPG promotions unless they have opted out and you can file a Best Rate Guarantee claims against them as well.

One may ask why not all Design Hotels have become SPG participating? The reason are the costs involved. Hotels must pay 5% of the room revenue for SPG (this is only for running the Starwood Preferred Guest program) and likely other fees for bookings coming through SPG. These hotels are paying for Design Hotels participation too.

I wish that these Design Hotels would provide the usual set of Gold and Platinum benefits as well such as space available Suite Upgrades and guaranteed late check-outs. Good to have them as part of the SPG nevertheless.
