Reader Comment: Unreliable United Airlines

A LoyaltyLobby reader sent me a message on Facebook earlier this week about a furious experience he had had with United Airlines dealing with flight delays and cancellations.

Reader Comment Unreliable United

Remember that you can always email me, sent a message via Facebook or use Twitter. I’ll try to cover Reader Questions & Comments here several times a week.

Here’s the message form the reader:

I was booked on a ticket from Munich via Houston to Managua.

11-06-2015 UA160 MUC – IAH

11-06-2015 UA1421 IAH – MAG

11-09-2015 UA1423 MAG – IAH BusinessFirst

11-09-2015 UA102 IAH – MUC Business First

In the following I will describe what currently makes me extremely furious:

The flight UA1421 to Managua was delayed and because of really time critical goods transported by this flight, this was crap.

But this is not the biggest problem. On my flight back I had 6 hours connection time in Houston, then the ground staff announced an one hour delay, after that they announced a three hour delay. At the end it was 8:30pm when they canceled the flight.

At this time I spent 10 ! hours at Houston Airport. Although the ground staff was really friendly and helpful, I was incredibly upset at this point of time. The staff rebooked me on the flight UA20 to Amsterdam the following day (25 hours delay!).

But this is not the end. Like nearly all my flights on this itinerary, UA20 was delayed as well (2 hours because of a wheel change) with the difference that boarding was completed, so all the people sat on their places in the „big“ 777-200.

Consequently I missed my connection flight KL1793 AMS-MUC (9:30am) and was rebooked on the LH 2303 at 12:20pm, so another 3 hour delay.

To sum up: In total there were 3 delayed flights, 1 canceled flight, a total delay of 28 !!! hours, a lot of stress, running and waiting time.

Instead of a premium flight experience I got the worst flight experience in my life. As the captain of UA20 said: „There is no excuse!” To be honest, if I count the hours which got lost due to this events (2 working days and several meetings) and multiply them with my hourly wage, …

Conclusion

I have said it before and will surely say it again in the future. You cannot choose United Airlines if it is time critical for you to reach your destination. You may be delayed by hours or days depending where the delay/mechanical happens. I really cannot understand how badly this airline is run.
