After quite some time of absence it appears that Lufthansa First Class is now available again for booking using Avianca LifeMiles.
Searching for availability to Asia next week I discovered that Lufthansa First Class has made a comeback to Lifemiles mileage awards.
Here is an example for Frankfurt to Beijing:
The Lifemiles award chart has changed a bit over the years and given this is a straight routing from A to B (the more generous routings have all been disabled in the meanwhile) it is not cheap per se, however for a First Class one way or Round Trip on Lufthansa it can still make sense IF you are willing to invest some money.
For Frankfurt to Beijing LifeMiles charges 115,000 miles per one way. Considering the regular sales LifeMiles has, such a one way can be had right now for 1,584 USD (plus tax).

Keep in mind that class of service mix is NOT possible with Lifemiles which means you won’t be able to get connection flights in Business Class. Also, the only flights available are those who are displayed online. Calling LifeMiles (which is a horrible experience to begin with) will not result in different availability.
Lufthansa opens up their First Class for partner airlines approximately 14 days prior to departure.
LifeMiles has offered me some very good redemptions over the years and it’s great to see Lufthansa First Class being back. If you plan on redeeming miles always do a test and click all the way through to the last screen to make sure this isn’t phantom availability which in fact is not bookable. Especially if you plan on purchasing miles just for this purpose.
I also urge caution though to buy vast amounts of LifeMiles unless you have immediate use for them. Avianca is known to change their award charts at a moments notice to the disadvantage of their members.
