A LoyaltyLobby reader sent me couple of emails about incorrectly credited IHG Rewards Club stays in the UK where the VAT amount had been deducted twice.
Here’s the comment from the Craig:
I have come across an issue with IHG points posting which may effect other UK IHG members. I recently stayed in London and thought the points posted looked low. Looked at the earning details view which seems to suggest that they are taking off the UK VAT (tax) TWICE ! (Included an annotated screen shot). This is a copy of the Missing Points form I have filed :
POINTS AWARDED INCORRECT – UK VAT @ 20% HAS BEEN TAKEN OFF TWICE.
POINTS TOTAL FOR THIS STAY SHOULD HAVE BEEN AS FOLLOWS ;
SPEND = £129
– 20% vat = £107.50
CONVERT TO US$ (0.6581) = $163.35
X 10 FOR POINTS = 1634
BONUS @ 50% = 817
FOR TOTAL = 2451.
POINTS AWARDED = 2043
THEREFORE 408 MISSING POINTS.
Have gone back the maximum 180 days and discovered a further 5 instances of this miscalculation which is around 10% of my stays incorrectly posted. Have opened missing points claims for all however I stay with IHG around 80 – 90 a year and have done for the last 12 years so how many points have I missed out on over this period of time. Just the 5 in the last 180 days are worth 3,000 so could be in excess of 8,000 per year (more stays in first half of year) and potentially up to 100k during my IHG membership.
Sorry its a bit lengthy but felt it worth highlighting as there are a lot of potential errors out there costing IHG members a lot points, possibly world wide but certainly in the UK

Reader also forwarded me several emails for point discrepancies that he had opened with IHG Rewards Club. They fixed the incorrectly posted points eventually, but took few email rounds to achieve this.
So, if you have had stays in the UK where the price shown at the time of booking has been VAT inclusive, you should check your online account statement to ensure that the correct number of points have been credited.
You must first log into your account and go to the Account Activity (access here). You can get the breakdown of the stay expenses by clicking the “Earning Details” link.
