GOL is a Brazilian airline that uses Smiles as its frequent flier program, although the loyalty program has been spun off to a separate publicly listed company.
Smiles has been very aggressive on its miles sales this year and has offered 200% bonus several times. When I wrote about the program and its miles sales back in May, I noted that there are quite a few award bright spots (read more here).
I purchased the maximum number of miles and the problem soon was that the bonus miles were about to expire (only 6 months) and I needed to come up with some itinerary for next year.
I used the GOL’s website to identify availability from both from Bangkok and Singapore to Doha and separately from Doha to Buenos Aires. After I found out the flights I would like to date, I searched from Singapore to Buenos Aires. The engine was pricing the flights correctly at 100,000 Smiles + $23.54 in taxes.
So, this one-way Singapore to Buenos Aires in Qatar Airways business class, ended up costing me just $762.50 plus the fees above.
If GOL has the sale again and you manage to purchase the miles, the price would be even lower due to the slide of the value of the Reais against the USD.
