The year is coming to a close and so the pressure is upon many to do a last minute push in order to collect a few missing miles in order to obtain or re-qualify the coveted frequent flier status.
The hunt for status miles is often difficult especially if you notice your dire situation towards the end of the year when the option become thin, both time wise and as far as reasonable deals for tickets are concerned.
Here is the question our reader Pavle. Remember you can always send us questions via Twitter, Email or Facebook and we will feature cases on a regular basis.
I need advice. i have Lufthansa Frequent Traveller card, this year i had 51 flights and around 82000 miles. I have possibility to change 20000 points for 10000 status points. So i miss 7000-8000 points and i have this situation last 2 years.
You are expert and have much more knowledge then me about M&M program. Please give me advice how can i get senator card. Thank you very much!
In Pavle’s case the amount of miles is not that high. He did not mention his location but wrote from an email address based in Hungary. There are various ways how he could go to collect these miles.
For one, if you have a current Miles & More status check if you have already received you Strike Elite Qualifying Miles which I wrote about roughly a week ago (see article here).
Lufthansa Miles & More credits status miles the following ways
- Flying in a eligible fare class
- Miles for riding the train in Germany (Express Rail & Air Rail)
- Exchanging Miles into max 10,000 Status Miles
As our reader already knows about options 1 & 3, the only option he might have not considered yet is the train.
The train option is beautiful because you can pretty much do this from your desk and book train rides online, then do an online checkin and print a boarding pass. The miles are being credited automatically.
You can find more information about Lufthansa Express Rail here.
This is an example of a simple Air Rail connection bookable on Lufthansa.com
This combination yields a total of 1,250 Elite Miles for current FTL/SEN. While certainly way too expensive to consider this option for a complete ‘rags to riches’ status run, to create 8,000 miles I think it’s a convenient option considering you don’t even have to leave your living room.
Be aware: The official rule is that the booked passenger has to be on board of that train. This however is rarely (if ever) enforced.
The reader has a few options at his disposal at this time. These options will become less and less the closer we move to December 31st.
There are usually a few good premium fares in Business Class ex Hungary but I’m not sure if there are any available with such short advance booking. I would probably prefer the train option and yes, Senator Status is definitely worth the extra investment. Especially because the status is good for two years.
