There has been some chatter over the past couple of months about the expiry of the Hyatt Gold Passport Diamond Suite Upgrade awards.
Many members have been told that the awards must be used by the expiry date, although the “rule” has been that they merely must be applied by the expiry date for a reservation as far out in the future as you can book.
You can access Hyatt’s web page for Diamond benefits here.
Late last week Hyatt Gold Passport made the following statement on FlyerTalk (access here):
Diamond members enjoy many exclusive privileges including suite upgrades at the time of reservation four times annually on eligible paid nights. On March 1, 2016, Diamond members will receive four new Diamond Suite Upgrade Awards, and we want to provide clarity on an upcoming modification to the redemption period:
What’s changing? Suite awards issued on or after March 1, 2016 must be redeemed for reservations with a checkout date prior to the expiration date of the award. Suite awards not redeemed prior to the expiration date of the award will be forfeited.
What’s not changing? Suite awards issued prior to March 1, 2016, must be redeemed by making a reservation no later than the last day of February 2016 for future reservations. In the event one of these Suite awards is redeemed for stay dates beyond the expiration date and the reservation is cancelled after the last day of February 2016, the Suite award will be forfeited.
These changes will be reflected on our website and within our Terms and Conditions on February 1, 2016.
Hyatt Gold Passport doesn’t reimburse properties anything for Diamond Suite Upgrade awards usage. Wouldn’t surprise me if there are properties that don’t want to commit suite upgrades far out to the future and as a result are offering no or very limited upgrade availability.
Not sure why Hyatt Gold Passport hasn’t sent out an email to its’ Diamond members about this change that affect many.
The Diamond Upgrade Certificates are not deposited to your account when you requalify, but rather when the previous status runs out.
It would be beneficial for members if Hyatt Gold Passport would deposit the four Suite Upgrade award immediately upon requalification. This would give members more time to use them, although Hyatt probably would prefer most of them expire unused.
