Air Canada Aeroplan sent out an email yesterday advertising economy return awards to Europe starting at just 24,000 miles this summer. Sounds good, right?
Well. This is nowhere near as good deal as it may sound due to very high scam surcharges that Air Canada/Aeroplan assesses on awards issues on Air Canada flights. You may end up saving very little or nothing at all.
You can access Aeroplan’s website here.
Here’s copy of the email:
Award search for Toronto – London Heathrow:
see how they say + taxes when most of the taxes are not taxes at all but rather ridiculous fuel surcharges (that they now call carrier surcharge).
So, you can “save” 175,44 CAD by using 30,700 Aeroplan miles instead of buying a paid fare on Air Canada for the same dates. This puts a value of 0,57 CAD cents per Aeroplan mile not considering the number of miles you would have earned for the paid fare.
If you are redeeming Aeroplan miles, you should absolutely avoid international Air Canada flights due to very high fuel surcharges. Very bad deal.
