Marriott and Starwood shareholders have now approved the deal that is expected to close before the end of the second quarter.

SPG made separate announcement about the loyalty program merger:

Getting answers to these complicated, important questions will take time. In fact, we don’t anticipate launching a newly combined program until 2018. This means SPG will continue to run separately until then. In the meantime, we’re actively exploring ways to build bridges between the two programs to further enhance your experience.

Oh well…. I wish that this merger would mean something positive for Starwood Preferred Guest members but difficult to come up with any. I guess that this mean that SPG members can stay at Starwood properties until the end of 2017 before jumping to somewhere else.
