Today’s edition of Award Success showcases another Krisflyer redemption originating in Auckland, New Zealand going to Hong Kong for only 63,750 Miles in First Class / Suites.
This is an excellent value redemption especially considering the Fuel Surcharges for flights originating in New Zealand are very limited.
I had waitlisted this flight in advance and wasn’t really sure if anything would come out of it because the First Class on AKL-SIN only has 4 Seats (1 Row) on the 777-300ER aircraft which is being used on that route and there was only one seat available for sale. Yet the waitlist confirmation came through 3 days before departure.
The taxes and surcharges in total came to 244 NZD which equals 147 EUR (~160 USD) which is very reasonable. Also the reason why I continued the ticket to Hong Kong is simply because it’s the same price as just remaining in Singapore. You can always add stopovers to your Saver Award ticket for a 100USD fee through the call center for future use if you can’t use the segment right away. I was able to get around this because I just stayed in Singapore for 14 hours overnight and continued the next day, therefore it counts as transiting within 24h.
Two words about the flight from Auckland to Singapore, the crew was excellent and the food was absolutely horrible. There is no Book The Cook offered ex Auckland and all of the meat dishes were completely overcooked and so well done that you could barely cut it apart. A real let down and I don’t understand why Singapore Airlines doesn’t offer book the cook on this route.
The onboard internet pricing is also somewhat out of touch. I don’t mind paying for it but then please have a realistic pricing for the service.
If I use the internet onboard an eleven hour flight I want to purchase a flat rate and not pay 12,99$ for 30MB. Come on, what’s that all about? 30 MB can barely download a medium amount of emails with attachments.
Considering this redemption gave me 11h + 4h of flight time in Singapore Airlines First Class it’s a steal to only pay 63,750 miles for it. I was initially considering to pop over to Sydney and fly from there but the taxes/fees are almost double from Australia so all in all I decided against it on this trip.
Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer has some very good redemption values within their award chart and it’s recommended to look out for it to extract the best value from your mileage balance!
