How’s Guaranteed Marriott Rewards Gold & Platinum 4PM Check Out Doing?

Marriott Rewards launched some new benefits last month (copied from SPG) and one of them was 4Pm check out for Gold and Platinum members.

Marriott Rewards Gold & Platinum Guaranteed 4PM Check Out

Marriott Rewards had worded the benefit in a way that could give leeway for the properties to deny it and thus making it something else than “guaranteed”. After online backlash, Marriott Rewards changed the wording to guaranteed and the benefit begun on 16th.

You can access Marriott’s web page for the new benefits here.

Here’s what Marriott guarantees:

Gold and Platinum Elite members may check out as late as 4pm. This benefit is guaranteed at all hotels that participate in Marriott Rewards®, except at resort and convention hotels, where it is based upon availability. Marriott Vacation Club® is excluded. Guaranteed late checkout launches globally on May 16.

And here’s what is written on the FAQ:

1. What is guaranteed late checkout?
Guaranteed late checkout is an enhanced Elite benefit for Gold & Platinum members, offering late checkout guaranteed as late as 4 PM that can be requested through voice reservations, Marriott app via the mobile check-in process, at the front desk during check-in, or on the day of departure. This benefit is guaranteed at all participating Marriott Rewards hotels, except at resort and convention hotels, where it is based upon availability. Marriott Vacation Club® is excluded.

2. To whom does this benefit apply?
Guaranteed late checkout applies to all Gold and Platinum Elite members.

3. When does the guaranteed late checkout take effect?
Guaranteed late checkout takes effect for all stays occurring on or after May 16, 2016. Stays that are booked before May 16, 2016, but take place on or after that date, will also be valid for guaranteed late checkout where available.

4. How is the guaranteed late checkout for Gold & Platinum Elite members different from priority late checkout for Silver Elite members?
Guaranteed late checkout offers Gold and Platinum Elite members the benefit of late checkout as late as 4 PM and also provides them with the opportunity to request late checkout earlier than the day of departure through voice reservations, the Marriott app or at the front desk during check-in. This benefit is guaranteed at all participating Marriott Rewards hotels, except at resort and convention hotels, where it is based upon availability. Marriott Vacation Club® is excluded. Priority late checkout offers Silver Elite members the benefit of late checkout with no timeframe guaranteed and can only be requested on the morning of departure and is based on availability.

5. How does this impact Silver Elite members and their existing benefit of priority late checkout?
All Silver Elite members will maintain their existing Elite benefit of priority late checkout based on availability when the member calls the front desk the morning of departure and will continue to be available at all Marriott brand hotels except Marriott Vacation Club.

6. Will I be able to request guaranteed late checkout prior to my arrival on my Marriott or Ritz-Carlton Mobile app?
Yes, Gold and Platinum members can request guaranteed late checkout prior to arrival when using mobile check-in or at the time of reservation.

• Mobile: Gold and Platinum Elite members can now use the app to request a late checkout during mobile check-in.

• Voice reservations: Members will have the option to request late checkout during the voice reservation process. This request will be confirmed at check-in.

7. What brands are participating in guaranteed late checkout for Gold and Platinum Elite members?
This benefit is guaranteed globally at all participating Marriott Rewards and Ritz-Carlton hotels, except at resort and convention hotels, where it is based upon availability. Marriott Vacation Club® is excluded.

8. Will this offer be available outside the U.S.?
Yes, this benefit will be available globally.

Conclusion

I had some Marriott stays last week to fulfill my Platinum fast track (need to get the status back + one stay hasn’t posted yes) but didn’t request any late check outs (was actually mainly staying at one IC and just checked in to get the stay credits).

It would be interesting to see a list of “convention” and “resort” properties. You would be surprised which hotels are categorized as such.
