British Airways made an enhancement to its Executive Club without any communication to membership.
Awards on Cathay Pacific and Dragonair between Hong Kong and Mainland China or Taipei are not available for redemptions within four days of departure. British Airways claims that this is due to “fraud”.
You can check this by yourself by searching for availability on BA’s website. Below are couple of examples.
Taipei – Hong Kong
Shanghai – Hong Kong
Makes you wander what this “fraud” is that British Airways is referring to or do they simply not want Executive Club members to redeem for these flights on short notice?
Using British Airways Avios for short-haul flights in economy or business close to departure tends to be very good value. Paid fares are usually very high and availability on high frequency routes such as Hong Kong – Taipei very good.
I tend to redeem for awards within few days of departure so need to keep in mind that there now is this limitation for CX/KA awards using BA miles (hopefully this is not spreading to other partners too). These same awards continue to be available using miles from other Oneworld programs.
