Air Berlin Topbonus has sent out emails to their Elite Members apologizing for the turbulent weeks in operations and uncertain signals about the future of the airline.
The email went out today to Topbonus Silver, Gold and Platinum Customers announcing some token appreciation/consolation bonus that varies by membership level.
Customers have to click the link in their email in order to receive the miles promised, they will not be awarded automatically and there is no general landing page for this promotion.
The text of the email says:
we apologize for the operational irregularities in the past week which resulted in severe inconvenience for our passengers, stemming from factors outside our sphere of influence.
Due to this we’d like to offer you as a Platinum Member
– 3,000 Miles (Award & Status Miles) Thank You Bonus
– Two Upgrade Vouchers to European Business Class
– The continued benefit of taking a second piece of carry-on
Another important message has been neglected due to the situation in the past few days. Air Berlin has a future again! As a smart alternative in European air travel, we’ll focus on a new business model to steer back into a bright future.
Previously purchased tickets remain valid and we’ll transport you to your destination safe and sound. You’re able to book any scheduled flight without hesitation.
Please activate your personal credit of 3,000 Award and Status Miles through clicking the button below until October 27th 2016.
We appreciate your continued confidence in our service and hope to see you again on board one of our aircraft to serve you.
With best wishes
Apparently there are different offers for each individual status level.
- Platinum Members: 3,000 Miles + 2 Upgrade Vouchers to European Business Class + Carry-on Benefit retained (2 pieces total).
- Gold Members: 2,000 Miles
- Silver Members: 1,000 Miles
These miles are credited as both Status and Award Miles but require manual activation via the personalized email button/link.
Check your email and also the Spam filter if you have received this message from Air Berlin and then click to redeem your miles.
Nice gesture from Air Berlin for Platinum members but I’m not sure if it sends the right message to give a Gold member 2,000 or even worse a Silver member 1,000 miles. I’m not saying that it’s worthless but it just looks mediocre and has no wow effect. On top of it all the manual activation which has less than ten weeks validity will result in many members not even profiting from this due to not opening such emails right away or in general, thinking it’s regular spam without any benefit (as most commercial emails and newsletters are).
Lufthansa credited the apology status miles to their status customers due to strike in the last two years automatically. Since those were only status miles though they’d fall off by years end while award miles stay on the books and constitute actual cost/liabilities.
