UPDATE: IHG Rewards Club “Member Booking Update” Email (Greater China Award Stays Changes January 1, 2017)

The other week week, IHG Rewards Club sent out “Member booking update” emails to members and I have covered the mess surrounding this email and clarification email from IHG on my posts here, here and here.

Many members were as baffled as I why IHG Rewards Club would send out an email that contained no new information about the booking process and the follow up email made equally little sense. Seems that members outside of Greater China have not been informed about the change that will take place on January 1, 2017.

You can access IHG Rewards Club here.

Here’s the information that was omitted from the English version of this email:

Here’s the email sent to Ambassador members in Chinese:

Here’s an additional info included an email to IHG members in Chinese:

And here’s information what that circled means in English:

From 2017, Member need to call and register Guest name with reservation center at least 7 days before, If reward night is not for member himself.

I requested information from IHG Rewards Club spokesperson if this only applies for members in China, those redeeming for China or for all members. Also, does China include Greater China that is usually interpreted as China + Macau, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Here’s the response that I received today from the spokesperson:

Yes, this applies to Greater China and will go into effect as of January 1, 2017. Moving forward, if a member would like to book a reward night for someone other than him/herself, they must call the member services hotline seven days in advance to the check in date. Please let me know if you have any other questions.

At least we now know that this rule will indeed be applied for IHG Rewards Club members that reside in Greater China and redeem rewards for others in the same countries (China, Hong Kong, Macau & Taiwan) effective January 1, 2017.

Not sure why IHG Rewards Club is the only program that would place such a limitation in place? Other programs don’t really care if I want to redeem for somebody else.

Let’s hope that we’ll hear something from the IHG Rewards Club over the next couple about positive changes promised to program elite members back in 2015.
