The price of a point purchased at the 100% bonus is 0.575 cents each.

Does it make sense to purchase points?

Purchasing points merely because they are on sale doesn’t make sense. If you have a good use for them, buying can lower the price of the stays considerably.

Usually using points make sense at the most expensive properties, during PointBreaks when some hotels are just 5,000 points per night or when the paid rates are through the roof due to some event in the city.

This is probably the last chance to purchase IHG Rewards Club points at 100% bonus this calendar year unless they come up with a holiday sale late December.

  1. Unfortunately we’re seeing fewer Point Break properties, so relying on this method of getting great value out of our points is pretty spotty. Suppose if one is planning a stay at a high end property, like ICs in major cities that go for 40K a night, $790 for 120K points might be a good deal (3 nights at an average of $273 a night, with no taxes). Several times this year, IHG also discounted the cost of the cash portion of Cash&Points by about 20%, making this an option to consider.

  2. For this to be a good deal compared to paying in cash and earning points on those stays IHG will have to sell their points at <.5 cents per point. They raised some hotels to higher categories and increased the max to 60k
