Reader Question: 12,000+ Points Short Of IHG Rewards Club Spire Elite Status?

A LoyaltyLobby reader sent me a question regarding being 12K+ points short of IHG Rewards Club Spire Elite status and using Bonus Points Packages to fulfill the requirement.

Here’s the email from the reader:

I have no more stay but can possibly squeeze in at most 2-3 nights with IHG this year. Is it worth doing it to get Spire? 12,202 points is a lot short, I think. I was supposed to be less short but the latest business event points turned out 4-5k points lower than I expected.

Also, the 50% more points (promo) on business events which gets posted later after the standard points are posted, will it be counted towards elite?

Your post in Aug confirms that bonus point package counts towards elite, but T&C says “IHG Rewards Club bonus point package.’

Holiday inn express in Bangkok

Shows these 3 packages, one says IHG rewards club bonus point package and the other two just say bonus point package.

I just wanna make sure the other two packages also count, and not just the first one.

I have no personal experience regarding how the business event bonus points post. At least for the regular stays the bonus points that are earned based on the status are not elite qualifying.

The Bonus Points Packages count towards the elite status. The three examples on the screenshot above are all Bonus Pints Packages albeit some worded incorrectly. These bonus points don’t often post correctly as elite qualifying, however, and you need to drop IHG Rewards Club an email.

The main differences between Platinum and Spire Elite are:

1. Choice benefit of being able to gift Platinum status or 25,000 bonus points

2. 100% base points bonus for Spire Elite members compared to 50% for Platinum ones

Bonus Points Packages:

IHG Rewards Club has various package but it is not possible to know what each property may have available (they used to publish a list property by property). There could be bonus points packages available that would only require two stays.

The 2,000 Bonus Points Package night rate that the reader refers on his email before sales tax and service charge is roughly $62/stay. Note that the package is PER STAY and not per night. You cannot also have back to back stays at the same property (need to have night in between) and have it post correctly.

So the question is, is the Spire Elite status worth $360++ and having to check in six times to a HIX in Bangkok?

It really boils down whether the reader feels that he has received adequate benefits for being Spire Elite member and if he can turn the stays in Bangkok for a vacation.

These are always tricky questions and difficult to give yes or no answer (as is the case most of the time). It really depends how many nights or points the reader thinks that he will earn in 2017. The 100% bonus for Spire Elite members compared to 50% one for Platinums makes a difference as well.
