Fabulous Fridays: Full Buffets At Executive Club Lounges In Asia During Evening Reception

The last Fabulous Friday of 2016 brings us to Hotel Executive Lounges that actually offer a large and full scale buffet during their evening cocktail hour, as I experienced this week at the Doubletree Shanghai.

Usually the food options at Executive Lounges aren’t supposed to be a dinner replacement but rather a snack in between, however some hotels really go all out with what they put on offer.

When I booked the Doubletree Shanghai-Pudong I was actually not having much in mind except getting a quick night in under the current set of promotions while staying on a very low rate (around $90 USD tax incl).

I was surprised that not only they upgraded me to a large suite in their East Tower, but the hotel also has a rather large Executive Lounge on the First Floor. First I thought it was a restaurant because it really looks like one, but this hotel must get pretty busy with Elite/Club guests. Not surprising given that it’s located right within a business park.

In the afternoon, I did some work and was the only guest for 2 hours; in the evening there were maybe a handful more. But the arrangement of food during the evening cocktail hour was certainly something else, especially for a Doubletree.

This is a very generous spread for an Exec Lounge and those who are familiar with Doubletree Hotels know that many properties don’t even offer a lounge in the first place.

I’ve stayed at a couple of Doubletree properties in the last few years. Most frequently at the one in Beijing which also has a very decent Club Lounge but quadrupled in price using HHonors points within the last 2 years. It’s actually one of my favorite brands not only within the Hilton portfolio due to their laid back but hospitable style and the mostly warm, comfortable decor of the rooms.

To be honest, I think you only see such generous evening spreads at hotels in Asia. Europe is rather sparse these days and I won’t even begin to talk about those ‘facilities’ (I don’t want to call them Lounges) in North America.

This was a pleasant surprise on my Shanghai trip, even though I know some other properties in the city, and have to say that the Club Lounge offerings at the Grand Hyatt Shanghai as well as the Marriott City Center are quite generous as well.
