American Airlines To Introduce Basic Economy Fares In Late February

American Airlines is now finally introducing Basic Economy fares that have been available for purchase on Delta and announced recently by United.

American Airlines Basic Economy

Basic Economy fares don’t come with carry on luggage (except for elites), cannot be upgraded (even for elites), cannot be changed or refunded, no standby, and you even have to pay a fee to select a seat in advance.

You can access the American Airlines web page for this product here.

American Airlines and oneworld elite members and those carrying certain AA affiliated credit cards can have a carry-on bag and have their usual checked luggage allowance even on Basic Economy fares.

Note that you early earn half elite qualifying miles and half a segment for Basic Economy flights. You earn the normal award miles based on the fare paid (when credited towards AAdvantage).

The surprise really is that it took this much time for American Airlines to introduce this fare type that they are supposedly using to combat Spirit, Frontier and other low cost carriers that charge for everything. Basic Economy fares should pop up mainly on leisure routes first.
