Qatar Airways has announced that the company will reveal a brand new Business Class seat during a presentation at the annual ITB Fair in Berlin which starts on March 8th 2017.

Depending on how fast this product will actually be flying, Qatar Airways could be at least 2 Generations ahead of other competing airlines that haven’t refreshed their Business Class product for over a decade.

At the moment Qatar Airways offers two different products on their long haul fleet that include the 1-2-1 configuration pod-style on the B787/A380 aircraft as well as the 2-2-2 configured lie-flat seats on the Boeing 777 fleet.

You can access the press release from Qatar Airways here with the details of the upcoming presentation.

Qatar Airways is set to reveal the much-anticipated evolution to its multiple award-winning Business Class product at this year’s ITB Berlin exhibition, the world’s leading trade fair for the travel industry to be held in Berlin from 8 to 12 March 2017.

The airline will unveil a brand new Business Class seat in a world exclusive ceremony to be held on the opening day of the exhibition, 8 March 2017, followed by a press conference which is expected to draw more than 200 international media, which is set to further detail Qatar Airways’ plans for the year ahead.

Guests and visitors to ITB Berlin will be invited to relax in the new Business Class seat at the airline’s exhibition stand in Hall 2.2, booth 208. The booth will offer visitors the opportunity to experience the comfort, entertainment and hospitality offered on board a Qatar Airways flight.

Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive, His Excellency Mr. Akbar Al Baker said: “I am delighted to officially announce that this year’s ITB exhibition will be the location at which we will premier our much-anticipated new Business Class product. As an airline we strive to offer our passengers the very best, not only in terms of our world class on board experience, but also our expanding global network. At this year’s ITB I look forward to sharing the revolutionary new patented Business Class seat with the travel industry and worldwide media, alongside many other new and exciting developments to our network.” …

This is really interesting as I consider Qatar’s Business Class on the B787 and A380 to be one of the top in it’s class. However, on the Boeing 777 it’s really hard to choose Qatar due to the 2-2-2 configuration and severe lack of privacy. The seats go 180 degrees flat but I honestly wouldn’t want to fly on these seats for a long period of time, especially the super long Auckland flight that just started to operate last week.

Let’s keep in mind that airlines such as British Airways haven’t changed their Business Class seat for more than a decade and others still offer angled lie flat which many call ‘the slide”.

Will the new product be something that will replace these seats on the 777 long haul fleet or just a new spectacular pod that will be installed on newly delivered aircraft?

The press release states the seat has already been patented so there might be some details floating around somewhere. In any case we’ll know more in a few weeks.
