IHG Rewards Club launched yesterday Sunshine Sale (read more here) that consisted of three separate offers including one for up to 20% off of cash portion of the Points & Cash.
Unlike other hotel loyalty programs, IHG Rewards Club basically sells you the points required for full point awards when one redeems for Points & Cash. The unintended consequence of this is that if you cancel the reservation the point transaction is not refunded and the points are just put back to your account including the purchased ones.
You can access IHG’s web page for this Points & Cash sale here.
Note that the Points & Cash discount can be tied to your IHG Rewards Club status.
Using point here doesn’t make too much sense considering the paid rate. You can, however, buy points at 0.46 cents each by choosing the 20,000 points option.
Most properties allow one to substitute points at the 10,000 points level buying them at 0.48 cents each.
IHG Rewards Club Points & Cash is often the cheapest backdoor to purchase points at a discount. I wouldn’t go overboard with this option, however. Doing this once or twice is probably ok.
The price of a point during the frequent sales when they are sold at 100% bonus is usually 0.6 cents each.
