Alaska Airlines launched back in May a Mileage Plan miles sale for up to 50% bonus (depends on the offer targeted to your account) on purchased miles that ends tomorrow (July 1, 2017).
Alaska Airlines is not part of any global alliance but has ties with many airlines for earning and redeeming miles such as Cathay Pacific, Emirates, Finnair and many others.
You can access Alaska’s web page for buying and gifting miles here.
Note that Alaska Airlines doesn’t limit the number of miles that you can purchase over a calendar year like some other airlines do. They merely have a 60,000 mile limit before bonus per transaction (used to be 40K).
Here’s the bonus schedule on my account:
Price at 40% bonus:
The price of Alaska Airlines miles purchased at the 40% bonus level is 2.11 cents each.
You have to bear in mind that Alaska may change their award charts overnight without any prior notification to its programs member just like they did with Emirates last year (read more here and here).
It still can, however, make sense to purchase them if you can find reasonable uses with partners such as Cathay Pacific.
The 50% bonus that some members are eligible for is the highest that Alaska sells its miles at. Worth considering for those that could use the miles on partner airline premium awards.
Here are the terms and conditions of this offer:
Only Mileage Plan™ members who receive this offer directly from Alaska Airlines via email are qualified to participate. This is an exclusive, non-transferable offer for the intended recipient only and may not be forwarded.
Transactions must be completed between 8:59 AM ET May 15 and 11:59 PM ET July 1, 2017 to be eligible for bonus miles.
Miles are purchased from Points.com Inc. for a cost of $27.50 per 1,000 miles, plus a 7.5% Federal Excise Tax*, and GST/HST for Canadian residents. Miles are non-refundable and do not count toward MVP and MVP/Gold status. Offer is subject to change and all terms and conditions of the Mileage Plan Program apply.
*Points.com Inc. is collecting Federal Excise Tax on behalf of Alaska Airlines Inc. Alaska Airlines Inc. has the obligation to collect Federal Excise Tax and remit the tax to the appropriate government agency.
New Mileage Plan Accounts Exception
If a member opens a new Mileage Plan account, they will have to wait 10 business days before they are allowed to purchase, gift, and transfer or swap miles online into their new Mileage Plan account. This is a measure to help prevent fraud. Customers may contact Customer Care for assistance.
