British Airways Executive Club Gold members have expanded reward seat availability in economy on BA operated flights and something called Gold Priority Rewards for booking award flight minimum of 30 days out by paying double Avios (when no reward seats available).
Gold Guest List members, however, have an additional award option called Gold Guest List Redemption where member can book an award twice during membership year for up to five passengers that only requires certain revenue bucket to be available.
So, I found myself going to Iceland (again) with bunch of friends during the marathon (someone in the group running). I need to be in London before or after the Iceland.
The obvious choice is to use BA for the flights if using miles/points. The price using Avios is reasonable at 10,000 plus minimal fees (Reward Flight Saver). The issue again was that no award availability (same situation last year with Reykjavik trip).
I always check paid prices for the flights. Wasn’t willing to fly out from Gatwick or Luton at an ungodly hour. The BA was pricing in the $450 range for the flights.
Found myself calling the Gold Guest List number in the UK and had the eticket on my email in less than 15 minutes.
This is a great benefit for those that travel enough to get to the Gold Guest List-level with BA. Probably the only way to use Avios around the school holidays for someone based in the UK and you can book it for up to FIVE passengers at a time.
I tend to use my Avios for partner flights and to these RFS flights in Europe where the taxes/fees are capped at a very reasonable level.
There is really no point to have booked this trip in business (could have done it). One has more space when seated on the exit row and I rarely eat or drink anything on Club Europe (cheap crap). For flights ex-London, I can always use the Concorde Room in T5 or Cathay lounge when flying out on BA from T3.
I have had the hotel booked for this trip since February (read more here) at the Hilton hotel in the city using the old redemption rates (paid rates throughout the roof).
