On Wednesday, I wrote about a hotel folio (read more here) that a reader forwarded from an award stay that he had had at the SpringHill Suites in Benton Harbor Michigan that apparently had tried to charge $2 for “Room Safe Income”.
Before I wrote the piece, I had reached to Marriott to get their side of the story, but only received it after it was already published.
You can access SpringHill Suites Benton Harbor’s website here.
Here’s an update from the Marriott:
Regarding the safe fee: “The hotel’s ‘safe fee’ runs counter to Marriott’s policy and we are working with the hotel to rectify this matter.”
Hotels try to be very creative with ancillary revenue (read junk fees). It is more difficult for those that cannot classify themselves as resorts and charge “resort fees”.
I am glad that Marriott affiliated properties are not allowed to charge “safe fees” per their franchise agreements and that corporate is reaching to this property reminding them about it.
You can always drop me an email about charges and weird things that you come across while traveling. Sometimes it easier to fix issues this way…..
