American Airlines has launched 30% conversion bonus for converting Marriott Rewards points to AAdvantage miles between October 21 – December 5, 2017 (AA had similar promo in 2014 – 2016 with lower conversion bonus when it included Travel Package-conversions).
The bonus only applies straight points to miles conversions and excludes more lucrative Travel Package awards where American Airlines is the miles partner.
NOTE: I had to modify this article after publication because I missed the small print on the T&Cs that AA had hidden after the Marriott Rewards T&Cs that said:
Travel Packages: Points converted to AAdvantage miles as part of a Marriott Rewards/AAdvantage travel package do not qualify for this promotion
Points To Miles Conversions:
You can convert Marriott Rewards points to AAdvantage miles per the table above.
Marriott Rewards Travel Packages:
This is absolutely my preferred way of converting points to miles. You can use 270,000 Marriott Rewards points for a week at category 1 to 5 Marriott hotels and have 120,000 American Airlines miles deposited to your account.
You can later up the hotel award category by paying the difference in Marriott Rewards points and extend the 12 month validity of the hotel award by at least for one additional year.
You can read my piece about Marriott Travel Packages here.
Why Travel Package Conversion?
If you have plenty of Marriott Rewards points, the Travel Package conversion is better even if you don’t plan using the hotel award part at all.
280,000 Marriott Rewards points would convert to 130,000 American Airlines miles during this offer (100,000 miles + 30% bonus). If you redeem 270,000 points for a Marriott Rewards Category 1-5 Travel Package with 120,000 miles, you end up with 156,00 AAdvantage miles with the bonus.
Not only you are using less points (10,000) but you end up with more miles (156,000 instead of 130,000) AND free week at category 1-5 category hotel.
I have redeemed all my Marriott Rewards points using the Travel Packages that is the best way to use them and issued one when this offer was around last time when it didn’t exclude Travel Packages (I am planning to issue one with United that has an offer that doesn’t exclude Travel Packages. You can read more about the United offer here).
Remember that you can always top up your Marriott Rewards account by buying 50,000 points (maximum per calendar year) for $625 (1.25 cents each). I have done this yearly as well. You can access Marriott’s web page for buying points here.
This is also an opportunity for SPG members to convert 90,000 Starpoints to 270,000 Marriott Rewards points and then to 156,000 AAdvantage miles + one week at cat 1 – 5 properties. You can always buy 30,000 SPG points as well! You can purchase SPG Starpoints here.
