Lufthansa Miles&More started in late October to make Star Alliance partner redemptions available through their website has now added further carriers to the list that customer can book that way.
As I mentioned in my previous article (see here) for years many airlines didn’t offer the full fledged online booking tool because they want to keep people that redeem their miles on the carriers own metal so they won’t have to reimburse partners for mileage awards booked on their flights. It’s simply a not so subtle manipulation of the members looking to cash in their miles.
In Lufthansa Miles & More’s case it was previously possible to redeem miles for Lufthansa Group airlines and local partners. Now this has been expanded to the following carriers:
I wasn’t able to find any premium class redemptions on Singapore Airlines, not even intra Asia. All I find on Singapore Airlines are Economy Class seats so there is still a significant level of blocking going on.
Lufthansa’s joint venture partner United still can’t be booked through their booking engine which would already solve the issue of connection flights in North America. Absolutely laughable why this isn’t implemented.
Having to call the call center is not only a huge waste of time but the result also depends on the quality of the agent. On top of it all you have to deal with opening hours of the call center.
North Atlantic routes are among the most popular redemptions and many of those are in combination with a United flight if a connection (such as to Hawaii) or even the long haul flight itself is involved. Crazy how Lufthansa can’t implement United in their booking tool. I’m also quite curious why Singapore Airlines doesn’t have premium awards available.
