The American couple that posted butt naked photos on Instagram around Thai temples and got arrested when trying to leave Thailand two weeks ago (read more here) have now been freed and deported from the country.
Their actions got very little sympathy around the internet mainly labeling the couple arrogant tourists that should have known better.
Here’s an update from the San Diego Gay & Lesbian News (access the piece here):
It has been confirmed by San Diego Gay and Lesbian News that Travis and Joseph Dasilva are headed home to San Diego after spending over a week in a Thai jail for taking a picture with their bare backsides exposed in front of a sacred temple in Bangkok.
The couple created international headlines for the stunt and faced up to five years in Thai prison had they been convicted of additional charges including being nude in public at a religious site.
But sources close to the men and their family tell San Diego Gay and Lesbian News that the court threw out those charges and sent them back to immigration police to be processed for deportation.
“They are in a clean but cold cell and sleeping on the floor,” Rodriguez told us on Friday. He adds that the married couple could get word they are going home in as little as 24-hours to as long as five days, it depends on how long it will take to process them.
That support seemed to be lacking even polarizing the LGBT community, not only on the national front but locally.
Social media was not kind to the 38-year-olds after SDGLN broke the story, although they had many who supported their safe return, the majority frowned upon their actions.
Here’s what happened (from the previous piece):
Here’s an excerpt from the Bangkok Post (access here):
Immigration police arrested two US citizens at Don Mueang airport Tuesday night on warrants that charged they posed for pictures showing their naked bottoms at Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn).
Pol Col Choengron Rimpadee, deputy spokesman of immigration police, said the Americans were arrested at the airport at about 8pm while they were trying to depart the country.
He identified them only as Joseph and Travis, both aged 38.
And here’s from The Nation (access here):
A gay American couple who author the Instagram page “Travelling Butts” have been arrested at Don Mueang International Airport for having taken photos showing their backsides with the respected Temple of the Dawn.
The spokesman said when the couple were checking out at the counter, the online database of the Immigration Bureau alerted police that they were on the arrest watchlist.
The two were handed over to the Bangkok Yai police station for further action. The spokesman said the charge would not be a normal public indecency charge. Instead, they would be charged with committing indecency in a place of worship, which carries a long jail term.
And here’s an excerpt from CBS8 of San Diego where this couple lives (access here):
The San Diego couple known as Traveling Butts on Instagram has more than 14,000 followers on the social media platform. Their photos showcase themselves posing with their naked rear ends in front of landmarks across the globe.
Their most recent posts in front of Buddhist temples sparked outrage on social media after people called them ignorant and disrespectful.
Perez believes the two are in a Bangkok jail after seeing an alarming message on Facebook. “It says, ‘anybody have any connections with diplomats in Bangkok or know a lawyer in Bangkok?’ That was my wake up call. Like, ‘Travis, what is going?’”
I would say that week or so in Thai prison and a small fine was probably adequate punishment for the couple plus paying for the trip back to the United States.
