SPG American Express card members have just received their stay credits for calendar year 2018 and as a special surprise an additional 2 stays / 5 nights bonus on top.
Over the years this credit card has been one of the most popular on the U.S. (and recently the Canadian) market and members will certainly be sad when SPG and this card will disappear.
I got the card once again in April last year, received the 35k bonus as well as the annual 2 stays / 5 nights credit (didn’t make a difference back then since I qualified the regular way) and then received the credit for 2018 last week.
Today another email arrived that an additional credit has been issued to the account. Sure enough the credits have both been issued:
Here is how the tier credit supposed to work based on the T&C:
Upon opening your Card Account and, by February 15th of each subsequent calendar year it is open, you will receive from Starwood credit for 2 stays and 5 nights towards your Starwood Preferred Guest® elite status. To receive this benefit, your Card Account must be linked to an SPG Member account in your name. This benefit is limited to one annual credit per Starwood Preferred Guest® Credit Card Account (“Starwood Consumer Card Account”), and one annual credit per Starwood Preferred Guest® Business Credit Card Account (“Starwood Business Card Account”).
You will not receive additional 2 stay or 5 night elite status credits if you have multiple Starwood Consumer Card Accounts or additional Cards, and you will not receive additional 2 stay or 5 night elite status credits if you have multiple Starwood Business Card Accounts or supplemental Cards. However, if you have both a Starwood Consumer Card Account and a Starwood Business Card Account, you can receive a maximum credit of 4 stays and 10 nights. Credits and status are subject to the Terms and Conditions of the SPG program.
I wonder if those who carry both the personal and the business card end up with 20 nights bonus this year?
It will be a sad day when SPG and the SPG Amex will be off the market. It’ll be interesting to see what Amex is going to do with the existing accounts, like if they just shut them down or if they allow a product change.
In any case this was a pleasant surprise and gives a nice start of year boost to the SPG account. Good to know I only need to do another 21 stays for SPG Platinum this year.
