Smokers can no longer puff away at 24 Thai beaches in 15 provinces starting today (February 1, 2018). Those that violate this ban may face a fine of 100,000 baht and/or one year in prison (wouldn’t recommend).
There are smoking areas reserved for those that need to puff away behind the beaches.

I wouldn’t recommend anyone trying to smoke at these beaches or they may have to pay the fine (or at least some money to the police) for breaking the law.
It is unfortunate that many don’t take care of their trash and not just of the cigarette butts referenced here. Tourism industry is huge in Thailand and taking care if their environment is important.
