Strong Elite Benefits For Mid Tier Status – Case Starwood Preferred Guest Gold At The W Taipei

When I checked in at the W Taipei the other day I noticed that the SPG Gold/Platinum Check-in had a special benefits table for both membership levels and that even the SPG Gold benefits were substantial.

Usually a mid tier status such as SPG Gold only gets the bare minimum as mandated by the loyalty program but surprisingly enough the W Taipei is quite generous to those members too.

While I was happy to enjoy my Platinum benefits including a rare upgrade to the Marvelous Suite I noticed that Gold members are also invited to the happy hour from 5-7 in the newly designed WooBar.

The drinks here are not only quite good but also pretty expensive and considering that SPG Gold is really easy to achieve it’s quite a substantial benefit.

Not sure what type of upgrades are available to Gold members at the W Taipei though but I found it very interesting that the only benefits that set SPG Platinum apart is the possibility to get a suite and the choice to select the excellent breakfast at the Kitchen Table (was already included in my rate so I picked the 500 points). Upgrades to suites are very rare at this property and in fact I was lucky that one just popped up in the availability when I checked in and I pushed for it. They sell quite a few suites especially on weekends and

Daily Fiji Water… well it’s nice I guess for those who are into still drinking water.

It’s very generous of the W Taipei to offer that happy hour to SPG Gold members. That being said this hotel is by no means a cheap ride and the usual overnight charge is ~ 8,000 TWD or more (US$270) tax included. I guess a few drinks are a good selling point for Gold’s who wouldn’t get comparable treatment anywhere else in town.

The happy hour is also a somewhat conciliatory benefits for Platinum members who end up without a suite at this very popular hotel. At least you can chuck away on some drinks in a stylish environment and in Taipei Woobar is still considered a very hip place to go.
