Virgin Velocity Members Save 30% Off Points Redemptions On Select Airlines Until February 28th, 2018

Virgin Australia Velocity rolled out a new promotion where members can save 30% on all redemptions using their Velocity points in the promotional period on select airlines.

The promo is good for all flights operated by Virgin Australia, Virgin Atlantic, Alitalia, Delta Air Lines or Air New Zealand (Trans Tasman only) and redeemed via the Velocity Frequent Flyer program for travel from 15 March 2018 until 9 January 2019.

Virgin Velocity has frequent promotions where they offers bonuses for credit card points transfers or mileage redemption discounts however they are often limited to domestic or Austral-Pacific flights, however this time around partner airlines and worldwide routes are included.

You can access the Velocity promotional website for this campaign here.

Here is the basic description of the promotion as found under the FAQ:

The 30% discount is available on all Reward Seats on flights operated by Virgin Australia, Virgin Atlantic, Alitalia, Delta Air Lines and Air New Zealand (Trans Tasman only) when redeemed by 28 February via or Virgin Australia website. Valid for travel from 15 March 2018 until 9 January 2019….

While we have sent this offer to a select group of members (those whom have subscribed to Other Partner Offers), the offer is open to all existing and new Velocity members. …

There is no registration required for this campaign.Simply make an eligible Virgin Australia Reward Seat booking by 28 February 2018.

Velocity has structured the design of the promotional site in a very strange way that makes it appear that a member needs to transfer points to their account (such as shopping or credit card points) which is however not that case and confirmed in the fine print as well.

The reason why they try to promote points transfers every left and right is of course revenue. The credit card companies have to pay these programs good money for every point they transfer into these frequent flyer accounts.

Here is an example for a flight from Los Angeles to Sydney in Economy Class (haven’t been able to find a single seat in Business Class for months):

Both the redemption value and surcharges are quite reasonable. I was able to find availability for one Virgin Australia flight from Melbourne to Hong Kong in Business Class:

This particular reward is priced at 55,800 Miles or 41,600 Miles + AU$ 84,95 in surcharges which is a pretty good bargain.

The redemption rates for these flights are very reasonable as long as the promotion is going. Unfortunately I couldn’t find any of the partner flight availability but probably some of the members have better success depending what routes they’re looking for.

For residents in Australia/South Pacific it’s pretty easy to accumulate Velocity points, be it through local shopping offers and especially with credit card offers. I remember I had a balance of ~ 50k collected during the time I lived in Sydney and never found proper use for them until I finally managed to used 48k miles for a Virgin America Domestic First Class flight from Los Angeles to New York. Needless to say the redemption option above Melbourne to Hong Kong is a much better option.
