Air Canada Introduces Basic Economy Fares

Air Canada is following US and European airlines and introducing Basic Economy fares without any frills.

These fares are non-refundable, don’t allow any changes/cancellations, members won’t earn any miles and they are non-upgradeable. You can, however, have carry-on bag without extra charge.

You can access Air Canada’s web page for these Basic Economy fares here.

Here’s Air Canada’s comparison between Basic Economy & Tango:

Conclusion

The airlines tend to price their lowest current air fares as “Basic Economy” when introducing these and the miles earning/baggage inclusive fares jump higher (contrary to what is communicated).

At least Air Canada states that Altitude benefits would apply on these fares as well. Interesting to see if they extend the Star Alliance Gold benefits of one checked bag too unlike Lufthansa owned airlines, Air New Zealand, TAP and SAS where now luggage exclusive fares are luggage exclusive even for alliance elites.
