Alaska Airlines has launched new up to 40% bonus for buying Mileage Plan miles through April 9, 2018.
Alaska Airlines is not part of any global alliance but has ties with many airlines for earning and redeeming miles such as Cathay Pacific, Emirates and Finnair.
You can access Alaska’s web page for buying and gifting miles here.
Note that Alaska Airlines doesn’t limit the number of miles that you can purchase over a calendar year like some other airlines do. They merely have a 60,000 mile limit before any possible bonus per transaction .
Here’s the bonus schedule:
All purchases this time are eligible for the bonus.
Price at 40% bonus:
The price of Alaska Airlines miles purchased at the 40% bonus level is 2.11 cents each.
Alaska Airlines miles are useful for partner awards on premium cabins on airlines such as Cathay Pacific. Just make sure that the award availability exists before you purchase the miles.
Alaska’s partnership with Air France and KLM is ending on April 30th, 2018. You still have couple of months to redeem on these two airlines. Finnair redemptions that were promised by the end of 2017 are still “coming soon”.
I would say that Mileage Plan miles right now are very good value when flying over the Pacific to Asia and Australia but not as useful when flying to Europe before Finnair redemptions are enabled.
Alaska Airlines sells Mileage Plan miles number of times throughout the year and the maximum bonus has been 50%, although this is very rare. The typical purchase bonus is this 40%.
